Last week Science Day came to Cotteridge! It began with assemblies where children got to carry out fun and exciting experiments that can even be done at home!

Blowing up balloons with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar!

Blowing bubble snakes!

Making foamy rainbow fountains!

Each class then spent Friday morning learning about a famous scientist and carrying out an investigation or activity related to their discovery or invention. There was a Battle of the Beaks in Year 3 to learn about Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, a David Attenborough-style mini beast hunt in Nursery and Reception and a wet waterproofing test in Year 1 to name but a few. Here’s a few photos from our morning of Science…

Nursery on a bug hunt

Getting ready for a soaking in Year 1!

Even Mr Bungaroo got a soaking!

Battle of the Beaks in Year 3! Whose beak can pick up the most marshmallows?

Or pasta?

Year 4 had an extra special treat when Mr Leonard offered to launch a rocket to demonstrate Newton’s laws of motion. They went to Cotteridge Park for the big launch.

Waiting with baited breath….. whoooosh!

Don’t worry the rocket did come down, with the help of gravity, landing in a bush in the park.

Year 5 explored Benjamin Franklin’s work on pitch and water.

The afternoon brought a new investigation for everyone….Bubble Trouble. Classes from Reception to Year 6 were mixed up and were given the task of making the ‘best’ bubble wand. There were some fantastic and creative inventions including paper plate wands, foil wands, straw wands and even hand wands! Here are some photos of our wand making afternoon. Messy but fun!

What a super day!
