Welcome to the Year 2

Our staff for 2020/21 are:
2B – Miss Bloomer with Teaching Assistant Mrs Johnson
2S – Mr Smith with Teaching Assistant Mrs Allen

In Year 2, the curriculum is both engaging and creative. Each term, through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) the children are encouraged to achieve excellence in all creative subjects. People of The Past enables the children to learn about the historical events and significant people. Florence Nightingale visits the children to make learning as real as possible. Other topics include What are Islands? and Hooray…Let’s Go On Holiday. Educational visits to Dudley Zoo and Weston Super-Mare add to the children’s enthusiasm and inspire their learning. The children participate fully in Forest School every Friday. They are led by Dean, a trained practitioner, in Cotteridge Park. Here they continue to immerse themselves into the Science and IPC curriculum as well as build fires and cook hotdogs!

The English curriculum covers a range of texts and genres, from fairy tales to non-fiction reports about Madagascar. Phonics is taught daily and spellings are practised frequently. Each day the children strive to become more independent and imaginative writers. Reading also takes place daily, with Guided Reading as well as children progressing through the reading scheme which is taken home. Our Year 2 Maths curriculum covers a range of concepts, including number, geometry, measure and statistics. The curriculum enables the children to be fluent in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as well as solve problems.

In the Summer term, the children sit the National End of Year Assessments for Maths and Reading. These results combined with Teacher Assessments throughout the year form a final judgement in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science.

Overall in Year 2, the children are inspired by the 4 C’s of P4C: Creative, Collaborative, Critical and Caring. We practice these styles of learning on a daily basis as we continue to mature intellectually and socially.
